And now, solar storms

And now, solar storms Turns out, there have been three large explosions on the sun that could cause magnetic storms of a moderate to strong level.В  Says who?В  Well.Joseph Kunches, a space weather scientist at the Space Weather Prediction Center, a division of the U.S.National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).В

These weather people are going to be the life of me!В  Now I have to worry about «space weather».В  These people have been watching to many episodes of The Jetsons.Click here for an up-to-date space weather forecast.В

As I write, solar wind speed is 507.6 km/sec.В  And Earth's magnetic field is still reverberating from a CME strike on August 5th that sparked one of the strongest geomagnetic storms in years.Registering 8 on the 0 to 9 "K-index" scale of magnetic disturbances, the storm at maximum sparked auroras across Europe and in many northern-tier US states.Maybe that is why my 1980s combination telephone-clock-radio died this morning.В

All kidding aside, «space weather» is the concept of changing environmental conditions in near-Earth space or the space from the Sun's atmosphere to the Earth's atmosphere. It is distinct from the concept of weather within the Earth's planetary atmosphere (troposphere and stratosphere).Space Weather is the description of changes in the ambient plasma, magnetic fields, radiation and other matter in space.Much of space weather is driven by energy carried through interplanetary space by the solar wind from regions near the surface of the Sun and the Sun's atmosphere (chromosphere and corona).

The March 9, 1989 there was a coronal ma*s ejection from the sun, which three and a half days later led to a severe geomagnetic storm hitting Earth. The storm began with extremely intense auroras at the poles. The aurora could be seen as far south as Texas. The storm interfered with satellite and radio communications, as well as, instrument readings on the space shuttle. It also caused the collapse of the Hydro-QuГ©bec electricity transmission system.

And then there was 1859.В  On September 1 and 2, the largest recorded geomagnetic storm occurred.Aurorae were seen around the world, most notably over the Caribbean.Telegraph systems all over Europe and North America failed in some cases even shocking telegraph operators.Without the space weatherman, do you think church attendance increased in September 1859.В  I say probably yes.В  Except for the Mayans.В  They knew the crucial date is 2012.В  You have sixteen months my friend!
