NO PAY FOR AIRZIM WORKERS SINCE APRIL

NO PAY FOR AIRZIM WORKERS SINCE APRIL

AIR Zimbabwe pilots yesterday downed tools again demanding their outstanding salaries and allowances. The national airline’s board chairman Mr Jonathan Kadzura and acting chief executive officer Mr Innocent Mavhunga confirmed the strike yesterday.

They, however, indicated that the issue had been resolved after they managed to secure money to pay all the workers.

It is understood that all workers at the airline had not been paid since April.

«Everybody is back at work. They have all been paid and they are working. It was only the pilots (who had gone on strike) otherwise everyone else was working,» said Mr Kadzura.

Mr Mavhunga said workers had been paid part of their allowances, while negotiations were still in progress.

«We are still in the process of finalising the issue. We have managed to pay the workers part of their salaries as you might be aware that they had outstanding salaries and allowances. We managed to secure funds today so they have been paid part of it and the money will be accessible from tomorrow (today) and latest by Monday.

«We are hoping to fly tomorrow (today). The pilots are still meeting,» he said.

A manager at the troubled airline who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the pilots had decided to down their tools despite Mr Kadzura’s a*surance to pay them yesterday.

«The board chairman told them on Monday that they should give him four days to sort out their salaries and today (yesterday) is the fourth day so the pilots decided to put pressure on management.

«It is unfortunate that these pilots are doing this. They were paid an average of US$40 000 when they went on strike in March, while some of us were not paid that much but we have not gone on strike,» said the source.

Such strikes usually cost the airline millions of dollars for failing to fly.
